South coast season in Sri Lanka
When Mirissa, Galle, and Tangalle shine — beach months, whales, and what to do in the wetter weeks.
## The short answer For **Mirissa, Galle, Tangalle, and the southwest beaches**, aim for **November through April**. That is the classic “down south” dry season most travellers mean.
## Whales Mirissa whale trips are most often productive **December–April**, with weather buffers built in. Never stake the whole trip on one morning.
## What the wet months feel like May–September can still work for fort walks and café days in Galle, but beach plans get riskier. If your dates are fixed in those months, consider the [east coast](/travel-guides/east-coast-season) or more inland nights.
## Practical tips from the road - Land CMB → Galle or Mirissa the same day if your flight is morning; rest if it is late. - Keep one flexible day for whales. - Tangalle after Mirissa if you want quieter water.
